New runner guide

What should I wear to a run club?

Good news: there is no dress code, and nobody is looking at your gear. Wear what you would wear on any run, and you are set. If it is your first one and you want a little more certainty, here is the short version.

Do I need special clothes or expensive gear?

No. Whatever you already run in — or would go for a jog in — is exactly right. Comfortable running shoes and clothes you can move and sweat in are the entire requirement. Nobody at a run club is judging your kit, and plenty of people show up in a plain t-shirt.

What should I actually wear?

Dress for the run, not the temperature at the start line — you warm up fast, so aim to feel slightly cool when you set off. Moisture-wicking clothes beat cotton if you have them, but they are not required. In cool weather, layers you can tie around your waist work well. Bring water, especially for anything over a few miles.

Anything I should not forget?

Your phone (for safety and to find the group), any personal fuel or hydration for a longer run, and — if the club meets before sunrise or after sunset — something reflective or a small light. If the run ends at a brewery or coffee shop, a card or some cash is handy for the optional hang, but never required.
