What to bring to your first run club

It is easy to overthink the packing for something new. For a run club, do not — the list is short, and none of it is special gear you would have to buy. Here is what to bring, what to skip, and what the club will already have covered.

What do I actually need to bring?

Less than you think. Running shoes, clothes you can sweat in, water, and your phone cover almost any first run. Everything else is optional, and you do not need a watch or any special equipment.

For a run longer than a few miles, bring your own water or a small handheld bottle and any fuel — a gel or a snack — you would normally take. If the club meets before sunrise or after dark, add something reflective or a small clip light.

Is there anything I should leave at home?

Anything you would worry about losing or carrying — most people run with just a phone and a key. Skip headphones, or keep one ear open: on a group run you want to hear callouts and the people around you, and many clubs treat both-ears-in headphones as a safety and etiquette issue.

Do I need money?

Only if you want it. The run itself is almost always free. If the club meets at or ends at a brewery or coffee shop, a card or a little cash is handy for the optional post-run hang — but it is never required, and plenty of people head straight home.

What does the club usually provide?

The route, and at many clubs the people who know it and will run with your pace group. Some host venues — running stores, breweries — offer water, bag storage, or bathrooms at the start. It varies by club, so its own page is the place to check, but you never need to bring more than the basics above.
